Chapter 1: Fundamentals of Tense & Verb Mechanics
1.1 What is Tense? (Tense কী?)
- উৎপত্তি: ইংরেজি Tense শব্দটি এসেছে ল্যাটিন শব্দ Tempus থেকে, যার আভিধানিক অর্থ Time (কাল বা সময়)।
- সংজ্ঞা: কোনো কাজ (Action) সম্পাদনের সময় বা অবস্থাকে প্রকাশ করার জন্য Verb-এর যে রূপভেদ বা পরিবর্তন ঘটে, তাকে Tense বলে।
> “Tense is the form taken by a verb to show the time of an action or state.”
1.2 Time বনাম Tense-এর পার্থক্য (Time vs Tense)
- “The Prime Minister arrives tomorrow.” ➔ ব্যাকরণগতভাবে Tense হলো Present Simple, কিন্তু Time নির্দেশ করছে Future Time।
- “I am leaving for London tonight.” ➔ Tense হলো Present Continuous, কিন্তু Time নির্দেশ করছে Future Time।
