Module 1: Spelling Fundamentals
Lesson 1.1: The English Alphabet, Vowels, and Consonants
1. Learning Objectives
- বর্ণমালার ২৬টি অক্ষরের শ্রেণিবিভাগ জানা।
- স্বরবর্ণ (Vowels) এবং ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণের (Consonants) কাজ ও গুরুত্ব বোঝা।
- ‘Y’-কে কেন কখনো কখনো Vowel বলা হয় তা স্পষ্ট করা।
2. Definition
- Alphabet (বর্ণমালা): ইংরেজি ভাষায় মোট ২৬টি অক্ষর (Letters) রয়েছে।
- Vowels (স্বরবর্ণ): যে বর্ণগুলো অন্য কোনো বর্ণের সাহায্য ছাড়া মুখগহ্বরের কোথাও বাতাস বাধা না পেয়ে উচ্চারিত হয় (A, E, I, O, U)।
- Consonants (ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ): যে বর্ণগুলো উচ্চারণের সময় ঠোঁট, দাঁত বা জিহ্বায় বাতাস বাধা পায় (বাকি ২১টি বর্ণ)।
- Semi-vowel / Sometimes Vowel: Y এবং ক্ষেত্রবিশেষে W।
3. Detailed Explanation & Spelling Rules
1. Rule 1: প্রতিটি সিলেবল বা শব্দে অন্তত একটি Vowel বা Vowel সাউন্ড থাকতে হবে।
- কোনো পূর্ণাঙ্গ ইংরেজি শব্দ স্বরবর্ণ ছাড়া গঠিত হতে পারে না।
- যেমন: cat, bed, sit, hot, cup.
2. Rule 2: ‘Y’ যখন Vowel হিসেবে কাজ করে:
- যখন কোনো শব্দের মাঝে বা শেষে A, E, I, O, U থাকে না, তখন ‘Y’ স্বরবর্ণের কাজ করে (I বা E-এর মতো উচ্চারিত হয়)।
- যেমন: my, cry, fly, gym, rhythm, myth, system.
4. Examples & Word Lists
- Short words with traditional vowels: man, hen, pig, dog, bus.
- Short words with ‘y’ as vowel: by, dry, fry, shy, sky, spy, try, why.
5. Memory Tips
💡 Memory Hack: মনে রাখবেন, ‘Y’ হলো ইংরেজির “Emergency Vowel”! যখন অন্য কোনো স্বরবর্ণ থাকে না, তখন ‘Y’ শব্দটিকে রক্ষা করতে এগিয়ে আসে (e.g., gym, rhythm).
Lesson 1.2: Letter Names vs. Letter Sounds
1. Learning Objectives
- অক্ষরের নাম (Letter Name) এবং অক্ষরের উচ্চারণ ধ্বনির (Letter Sound) পার্থক্য বোঝা।
- ভুল বানান লেখার মূল কারণ শনাক্ত করা।
2. Detailed Explanation
1.3: Spelling vs. Pronunciation
1. Learning Objectives
- বানান এবং উচ্চারণের অমিলের কারণ অনুধাবন করা।
- কেন হুবহু উচ্চারণের মতো ইংরেজি বানান হয় না তা জানা।
2. Detailed Explanation
ইংরেজি একটি “Opaque Orthography” বা বহু ভাষার সমন্বয়ে গড়ে ওঠা ভাষা। ইংরেজি ভাষায় প্রায় ৪৪টি স্বতন্ত্র ধ্বনি (Phonemes) রয়েছে, কিন্তু লেখার জন্য অক্ষর আছে মাত্র ২৬টি!
- একই ধ্বনি ভিন্ন বানানে লেখা হয়:
- /f/ ধ্বনি: fish, phone, cough.
- /k/ ধ্বনি: cat, kite, duck, chemistry.
- একই বানান ভিন্ন ধ্বনি তৈরি করে:
- ough: though (ও), through (উ), cough (অফ), rough (আফ), bough (আউ)।
Lesson 1.4: The Silent Letters Master Guide (অনুচ্চারিত বর্ণের পূর্ণাঙ্গ নিয়ম)

Module 3: Basic Spelling Rules
Lesson 3.1: The CVC Word Pattern (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant)
1. Rule Definition
একটি সিলেবলবিশিষ্ট কোনো শব্দের গঠন যদি ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ + স্বরবর্ণ + ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ (C-V-C) হয়, তবে মাঝের স্বরবর্ণটি সর্বদা Short Vowel Sound ধারণ করে।
- bat, hen, pin, dog, sun.
Lesson 3.2: The Magic ‘Silent-e’ Rule (CVCe Pattern)
1. Definition & Formula
কোনো এক-সিলেবল শব্দের শেষে অনুচ্চারিত E যুক্ত হলে, তার পূর্ববর্তী স্বরবর্ণটি Short Sound থেকে Long Sound-এ পরিবর্তিত হয়।
CVC (Short Vowel) + Magic 'e' ➔ CVCe (Long Vowel)
───────────────── ───────── ─────────────────
cap (/æ/ ক্যাপ) + e ➔ cape (/eɪ/ কেইপ)
mat (ম্যাট) + e ➔ mate (মেইট)
bit (বিট) + e ➔ bite (বাইট)
pin (পিন) + e ➔ pine (পাইন)
hop (হপ) + e ➔ hope (হোপ)
not (নট) + e ➔ note (নোট)
cub (কাব) + e ➔ cube (কিউব)
tub (টাব) + e ➔ tube (টিউব)
Lesson 3.3: Consonant Doubling (The 1-1-1 Rule)
1. The Rule
যদি কোনো শব্দে:
1. ১টি মাত্র সিলেবল থাকে (1 syllable),
2. ১টি মাত্র স্বরবর্ণ থাকে (1 vowel), এবং
3. শব্দটি ১টি মাত্র ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ দিয়ে শেষ হয় (1 consonant)
তাহলে স্বরবর্ণযুক্ত কোনো প্রত্যয় (যেমন: -ing, -ed, -er, -est) যুক্ত করার সময় শেষের ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণটি দ্বিত্ব (Double) হয়।
2. Examples
- run ➔ running (r-u-n: 1 syllable, 1 vowel, 1 final consonant)
- stop ➔ stopped, stopping
- swim ➔ swimming, swimmer
- big ➔ bigger, biggest
- plan ➔ planned, planning
- rob ➔ robbed, robber
3. বহুল ব্যবহৃত ২-সিলেবলের দ্বিত্ব নিয়ম (Accent on Last Syllable)
শব্দটিতে ২ সিলেবল থাকলেও যদি শেষের সিলেবলের উপর জোর (Stress) পড়ে, তবে শেষের বর্ণ দ্বিত্ব হবে:
- ad-MIT ➔ admitted, admitting
- pre-FER ➔ preferred, preferring
- be-GIN ➔ beginning
- oc-CUR ➔ occurred, occurring, occurrence
- ব্যতিক্রম (শুরুর সিলেবলে জোর থাকলে দ্বিত্ব হয় না):
- VIS-it ➔ visited, visiting (not visitted)
- OP-en ➔ opened, opening
Lesson 3.4: Dropping Silent-e Before Suffixes
1. The Rule
- কোনো শব্দের শেষে অনুচ্চারিত E থাকলে এবং তার সাথে Vowel Suffix (-ing, -ed, -able, -ous, -er) যুক্ত হলে E লোপ পায় (Drop হয়)।
- make + ing ➔ making (not makeing)
- write + ing ➔ writing (not writeing)
- love + able ➔ lovable
- fame + ous ➔ famous
- come + ing ➔ coming
- কিন্তু Consonant Suffix (-ful, -less, -ly, -ment) যুক্ত হলে E অক্ষত থাকে:
- hope + ful ➔ hopeful
- care + less ➔ careless
- love + ly ➔ lovely
- manage + ment ➔ management
2. Critical Exceptions (বিসিএস ও নিয়োগ পরীক্ষার প্রিয় ব্যতিক্রম):
- Soft ‘c’ ও ‘g’-এর ধ্বনি অক্ষুণ্ন রাখতে -able/-ous এর পূর্বে ‘e’ থাকে:
- notice + able ➔ noticeable (not noticable)
- courage + ous ➔ courageous (not couragous)
- change + able ➔ changeable
- দ্ব্যর্থকতা দূর করতে: dyeing (রং করা) বনাম dying (মৃত্যুর মুখে পতিত)।
- শব্দশেষে -ee, -oe, -ye থাকলে ‘e’ বাদ যায় না: seeing, agreeing, canoeing, eyeing.
Lesson 3.5: Changing ‘Y’ to ‘I’
1. The Rule
- শব্দের শেষে Consonant + Y থাকলে, কোনো প্রত্যয় (Suffix) যোগ করার সময় Y পরিবর্তিত হয়ে I হয়:
- carry + ed ➔ carried
- baby + es ➔ babies
- happy + ly ➔ happily
- happy + ness ➔ happiness
- beauty + ful ➔ beautiful
- busy + ness ➔ business
- ব্যতিক্রম ১ (-ing যোগে): পাশাপাশি দুটি ‘i’ এড়াতে -ing যোগ করার সময় Y অক্ষত থাকে:
- carry + ing ➔ carrying (not carriing)
- study + ing ➔ studying
- cry + ing ➔ crying
- ব্যতিক্রম ২ (Vowel + Y থাকলে Y পরিবর্তন হয় না):
- play + ed ➔ played
- boy + s ➔ boys
- enjoy + ed ➔ enjoyed
Module 4: Syllables and Word Structure
Lesson 4.1: Syllables and Syllable Types
1. Definition
একটি শব্দের যতটুকু অংশ মুখের একটিমাত্র ধাক্কায় (Single push of breath) একবারে উচ্চারণ করা যায়, তাকে Syllable (শব্দাংশ) বলে।
2. The 6 Syllable Types
1. Closed Syllable (আবদ্ধ শব্দাংশ): ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ দিয়ে শেষ হয়, স্বরধ্বনি হ্রস্ব হয় (cat, pen, sit, hop, nut).
2. Open Syllable (উন্মুক্ত শব্দাংশ): স্বরবর্ণ দিয়ে শেষ হয়, স্বরধ্বনি দীর্ঘ হয় (no, he, she, go, my).
3. Silent-e Syllable: শেষে অনুচ্চারিত e থাকে (take, ride, poke).
4. Vowel Team Syllable: স্বরবর্ণের জোড় থাকে (meat, boat, rain).
5. R-Controlled Syllable: স্বরবর্ণের সাথে r যুক্ত থাকে (car, bird, corn).
6. Consonant-le Syllable: শব্দের শেষে ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ + le থাকে (ta-ble, can-dle, li-ttle).
Module 5: Intermediate Spelling Rules
Lesson 5.1: The ‘I Before E Except After C’ Rule
1. The Traditional Rule & Formula
"I before E, except after C,
or when sounding like A, as in neighbor and weigh."
2. High-Yield Exceptions (বিসিএস পরীক্ষায় বারবার আসা ব্যতিক্রম):
এই ব্যতিক্রমগুলো মুখস্থ রাখা আবশ্যক:
- weird (অদ্ভুত)
- seize (জব্দ বা ছিনিয়ে নেওয়া)
- foreign (বিদেশি)
- sovereign (সার্বভৌম)
- height (উচ্চতা)
- leisure (অবসর)
- neither / either
💡 Memory Hack for Exceptions:
মনে রাখুন এই বাক্যটি: “It is weird that neither foreign sovereign could seize the height of leisure.” (এই বাক্যের প্রতিটি শব্দে C না থাকা সত্ত্বেও E আগে বসে!)
Lesson 5.2: Hard and Soft ‘C’ and ‘G’
1. The Rule
- C এবং G-এর পর যদি E, I, বা Y থাকে, তবে তাদের উচ্চারণ হয় Soft:
- Soft C = /s/ (স): city, center, cycle, receive, pencil.
- Soft G = /dʒ/ (জ): giant, gem, gym, gentle, bridge.
- C এবং G-এর পর যদি A, O, বা U অথবা কোনো ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ থাকে, তবে উচ্চারণ হয় Hard:
- Hard C = /k/ (ক): cat, cold, cup, crash, music.
- Hard G = /g/ (গ): game, gold, gun, green, flag.
Lesson 5.3: CK বনাম K বনাম C Endings
1. The Rule
- এক-সিলেবল শব্দে Short Vowel-এর ঠিক পরে /k/ ধ্বনি আসলে ‘-ck’ বসে:
- back, lock, duck, sick, neck, track.
- Long Vowel বা Consonant-এর পর /k/ ধ্বনি আসলে শুধু ‘-k’ বসে:
- bank, milk, park, book, look, cook.
- দুই বা ততোধিক সিলেবলের শেষে সাধারণত ‘-c’ বসে:
- music, panic, topic, public, traffic.
Lesson 5.4: Plurals of F and FE (-ves)
1. The Rule
অনেক ইংরেজি শব্দ যার শেষে -f বা -fe থাকে, তাদের বহুবচনে f/fe পরিবর্তিত হয়ে -ves হয়:
- leaf ➔ leaves
- half ➔ halves
- wife ➔ wives
- knife ➔ knives
- thief ➔ thieves
- life ➔ lives
- wolf ➔ wolves
- calf ➔ calves
2. Exceptions (যাদের শেষে শুধু -s যুক্ত হয়):
- chief ➔ chiefs
- roof ➔ roofs
- cliff ➔ cliffs
- safe ➔ safes

Module 6: Commonly Misspelled Words & Confusing Pairs
Lesson 6.1: High-Frequency Everyday Spelling Errors (পোস্টমর্টেম ও সমাধান)
| ক্রম | Incorrect Spelling | Correct Spelling | Why it is Confusing (ভুলের কারণ ও টেকনিক) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ১ | Accomodate | Accommodate | মনে রাখুন: 2 Cs and 2 Ms (দুইজন অতিথিকে স্থান দিতে ২ জোড়া ডাবল বর্ণ লাগে!) |
| ২ | Embarass | Embarrass | মনে রাখুন: 2 Rs and 2 Ss (লজ্জা পেলে ২টি গাল লাল হয় – 2 R, 2 S) |
| ৩ | Seperate | Separate | মনে রাখুন: মাঝখানে a-r-a (There is “a rat” in separate) |
| ৪ | Definately | Definitely | মনে রাখুন: মূল শব্দ Finite ➔ de-finite-ly (মাঝখানে ‘i’ হবে, ‘a’ নয়) |
| ৫ | Occured | Occurred | 1-1-1 স্ট্রেস নিয়মে শেষের ‘r’ ডাবল হবে (2 Cs, 2 Rs) |
| ৬ | Neccessary | Necessary | মনে রাখুন: 1 Collar (C) and 2 Sleeves (S) (একটি জামায় ১টি কলার ও ২টি হাতা থাকে!) |
| ৭ | Tommorow | Tomorrow | মনে রাখুন: 1 M, 2 Rs (To – mor – row) |

3. Circle the Doubtful Words (সন্দেহজনক শব্দ চিহ্নিত করুন): যে শব্দটি দেখতে অদ্ভুত লাগে তা তৎক্ষণাৎ গোল দাগ দিন।
4. Use Word Families (শব্দমূল খুঁজুন): preparation মনে রাখার জন্য মূল শব্দ prepare স্মরণ করুন।
5. Maintain a Personal Error Journal (ব্যক্তিগত ভুল খাতা): আপনি যেসব বানানে বারবার ভুল করেন, সেগুলো একটি খাতায় লাল কালিতে লিখে রাখুন।
